“Running Strong”
It doesn’t matter how fast you are—if the aerobic strength isn’t there, your speed is useless! You can’t maintain a fast pace and still have a kick. There is no better way to develop power—or improve efficiency and endurance than HILLS!
Whether it is repeats on short ascents, or longer inclines that recruit needed muscle fibers that are already fatigued; hills build the needed strength for that last lap or that “home stretch” finish. Hills can build leg and lung power, but don’t subject your joints to the stress of speed-work. You won’t feel fast going up hills, but you will begin to feel
strong! That strength will pay dividends in the later part of a race. The great runners learn to “relax with speed”.
